Artist statement
“After arriving in Berlin for the first time in June 2023, I became intrigued with the number of Photoautomats that were located across the city. Photoautomats are street vending machines people use to take passport-size black-and-white portrait photos of themselves. I began using them to take photos that weren't portraits of people, or myself. Instead, I wanted to leave the frame open to capture the different sites of the automats, their backdrops, and the analog photographic process itself. The paintings in this exhibition are based on these photos. The 9 works included were developed through an exchange between photographic, painting, and print-based processes. Each canvas draws upon the indexical traces revealed by each image and location, to reflect the various ways that paint, photo, and print media continue to be used in extension to the built environment.”
