Autoscopy by Hippolyte Thillard

  • Backhaus Projects 168 Weserstr. Berlin, BE, 12045 Germany (map)

Curated by Louise des Places, the exhibition Autoscopy by Hippolyte Thillard, culminates the various practices of the artist in his exploration of body and spirit. Across mediums of charcoal, video & performance the artist envisages a dalliance of bodily vulnerability and fragility against the optimism of spiritual narratives.

For thousands of years, religions and spiritualities have tried to separate body and soul into two different entities. Refusing to let a mass of flesh define us; through stories of astral planes, silver cords, bodies of lights, or soul flights. By exploring the fragility of the human body and the secret messages it conveys, Hippolyte Thillard forces us to a new level of vulnerability. A vulnerability that can feel like missing a layer of our epidermis. And leaves us with nowhere to hide. No beliefs or mythology to turn to.

And yet, “Autoscopy” is an invitation to look at ourselves from above, and take part in this astral travel transcending space and matter. To step out of this narrow perception of oneself, and to become aware of the signals that we send to others without us even noticing it most of the time.

In this chaos of communication, Hippolyte Thillard explores the difficulties of comprehension between languages, verbal and non-verbal, and the search for an alternative way of expression and connection through movement. He addresses complex issues and universal struggles such as the demonstration of emotions; as well as the concept of modesty and immodesty, the pressure of the daily life, and the disillusionment of individuals in the face of History.
